As we look to the Bible to gain understanding about the nature of love, we’ll find that it doesn’t mention falling in love or falling out of love. Those are human terms that we’ve assigned to the idea of love and marriage.
The kind of love we’re called to as Christians is radical and countercultural. We’re called to demonstrate love to others—we’re told that love is the fruit of the Spirit. So, it’s the Holy Spirit that empowers us to love others—and that includes our spouse. We’re only able to love as God directs us to love when we surrender to the Holy Spirit who empowers us to love!
It’s crucial to recognize that your role in all of this isn’t dependent on you, but dependent on God. When you submit to the Holy Spirit, He can fill your heart with compassion. When you submit to the indwelling Christ, you can see and love others through the eyes of Jesus.
It’s through Christ that we can demonstrate a love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and never ends. (1 Corinthians 13:7-8)
When you place your will under the will of God, He can nurture love in your heart and empower you to love not only spouse, but everyone.
