The fuel for true forgiveness

What does forgiveness really look like? I was speaking one day with a dear woman who’d been betrayed by her husband. She told me the pain she felt was “Just like Velcro… It’s stuck on my heart and won’t let go. What can I do?”

We knelt together and I told her, “Let’s quit trying to make it go away and just ask God to take it! You’re helpless in this. Let’s give God permission to take it away.” And she did.

In many of my recent conversations, I’ve found the issue of emotional pain coming up quite often. You don’t have to look far to find someone who’s been hurt as a result of disagreement or conflict. Maybe you’re one of those who’ve been hurt by your spouse or someone else and you’ve found yourself keeping a running record of wrongs.

Let me encourage you—just as I did that woman—with the healing and forgiveness that flows as you give God permission to take your pains.

First Corinthians 13:5–6 says, “[Love] keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” The love that fuels true forgiveness doesn’t keep track of how you’ve been wronged. Rather, it empowers you to let God take your hurts and replace them with His love.

If you have a hurt that’s sticking like Velcro, tell God, “I can’t do this! It’s Velcro, God, so take it. Work a miracle for me—that’s your job, not mine.”

You can’t fix it, but He can if you let Him. He’ll lend you His power and everything you need to see His love transform any relationship.
