It's ironic that the celebration of “communion,” which is intended to show our oneness in Christ, is actually a point of major division in the Christian church. Why is this? And why so many different names for it?

Whether it's called the Eucharist, the Breaking of Bread, the Lord's Supper, or Holy Communion, there's one central factor – it is something that was deeply rooted in the ministry of the Lord Jesus. The expectation was that down through the centuries, followers of Jesus would participate in communion at regular intervals.

In this message based on Matthew 26:17-30 and 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, Stuart Briscoe walks us through the history of the Lord's Supper. He begins with its origin in what we commonly call the Last Supper, and follows with different interpretations and practices we see in Christian churches today.

Scripture: Matthew 26:17-26:30, 1 Corinthians 11:17-11:34
