Teaching Series

Jesus assumed that His disciples would faithfully fulfill the commission He had given them and that as a result there would be future generations of believers, including present day believers. So when He prayed for future believers His prayer included us! That He prayed for us is highly significant. What He prayed for us should be clearly understood.

Scripture: John 17:20-17:26

Does anyone ever ask, “How are you?” and you reply, “Well, under the circumstances….” The problem is that’s exactly where we are living—under the circumstances! How do we rise above the adversity and sing a song of praise? From the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, Jill Briscoe shows us how Hannah, under very difficult circumstances, found the secret.

Scripture: 1 Samuel 1, 1 Samuel 2

Ever have those prayers that God doesn't seem to be answering? We all have dreams and longings—sometimes they go unfulfilled. We wonder, "Where is God in my pain? Does He even hear me?" In this message, Jill uses the example of Hannah and her desire for a child to teach us that God does indeed hear us.

Scripture: 1 Samuel 1-3

Life can be rough. Bad things happen. It's easy to take those bad things and walk down the road of bitterness where our relationships with friends and family suffer. In this message, Jill tells us how Naomi's experiences made her an empty, bitter woman, but she got back on track with the help of her daughter-in-law Ruth and became a full, better woman.

Scripture: Ruth

What does your daily schedule look like? Is it full of errands and events? Sometimes we become workaholics and worriers, filling our days with too many tasks and constant concerns about things we can't control rather than taking time to focus on the most important thing of all.

In this message, Jill uses the example of Martha to show us instead how Jesus would want us to fill our time.

Scripture: Luke 10:38-10:42

When Peter was awakened by the angel in prison, he woke to a new life. Paul says believers have a similar experience—it’s like “rising from the dead.” But this new life requires care. It takes a lot of wisdom.

Scripture: Ephesians 5:8-5:20

It is a well-established fact among believers that "man cannot live by bread alone," but that the Word "from the mouth of God" is vitally necessary (Mt. 4:4). However, it is equally well established that many believers have inadequate appetites for and diets of the Word of God.

Scripture: Colossians 3:16

We all get tired sometimes. And sometimes in our tiredness we get to a point where we, like Elijah, say "I’ve had enough, Lord." Where do we go once we've reached that point? How can we find refreshment and get moving again? In this message, Jill uses Elijah's story to teach us that God alone can refresh us just as He did for Elijah.

Scripture: 1 Kings 19:1-19:18

One of the hardest things in life is facing rejection, especially when it comes from someone we love. We, like Leah, might keep striving, struggling, and manipulating to earn acceptance from our loved one. We may feel alone, but God sees and hears what we endure.

In this message, Jill walks us through Leah's struggle with rejection and shows us the God who saw, heard, and loved Leah through it all.

Scripture: Genesis 29-30

Someone has said, “Too many Christians worship their work, work at their play, and play at their worship.” Let’s talk about worship with particular reference to psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

Scripture: Colossians 3:16

Some of the most well-known Bible characters had bad days—just as we do. No matter what your struggle may be today—depression, low self-esteem, bitterness, disappointment, anger, jealousy, weariness, even a lost will to live—there is a person in the Bible who felt those exact same feelings. Jill takes us through this familiar story to reveal the Father's heart.

Scripture: Luke 15:1-15:24

God’s will, God’s Word, and God’s worship may sound a little spiritual to some people. But Paul is extremely practical when he turns his attention to “whatever you do.” That just about covers everything!

Scripture: Colossians 3:17

“A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” Proverbs 25:11

Have you ever had an “ah ha” moment? A time when something was said that just clicked with you, and it permanently changed your perspective?

Throughout Stuart Briscoe’s lifetime, from his childhood to his service in the Royal Marines, and then as a full-time pastor, he had a number of spiritual “ah ha” moments—times when people he greatly respected shared words of wisdom with him that shaped his worldview and ministry.

Stuart explains the five key statements that left a lasting impression on him and drive his faith today.

Scripture: Proverbs 25:11

There is never enough time! We have things we should do, things people tell us to do, and things we want to do. They all end up on our "to-do" list, which becomes too long! In this message from Stuart, he recalls early days of ministry when well-meaning friends gave him advice on how to be: more prayerful, more physically fit, well-read, well-rested, family-focused, and ministry-focused!

We, too, often must choose between competing priorities. This message teaches that when we seek His Kingdom first, everything else falls into place.

Scripture: Matthew 6:33

Ever since Jimmy Carter announced that he was running for President and that he had been “born again,” the term has been in vogue. It has also been misused, abused, and generally depreciated. The question we need to ask is, “Is the new birth an important aspect of spiritual experience?”

Scripture: John 3:1-3:21

The name “Christian” was given to some of Christ’s disciples as an uncomplimentary nickname, but in time it became a recognized designation of those who followed Christ. In more recent times the meaning of the term has become confused; a look at its origins should help.

Scripture: Acts 11:19-11:26

“Disciple” is not a commonly used word in ordinary conversations, but it should be a highly respected word in Christian thought because, among other things, our Lord’s final instructions included the command to make disciples. What did He mean?

Scripture: Luke 5:1-5:11

Apparently Peter was frustrated when he asked Jesus, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother?” Forgiveness is an integral part of Christian experience; so Peter was right to ask for help. Many of us need help with forgiveness, too.

Scripture: Matthew 18:21-18:35

“Eternal security” is not a biblical term, neither is “once saved always saved,” but both are used quite commonly among Christians. They relate to the question as to whether Christians will always remain true to the Lord as long as they live, or whether some may fall away.

Scripture: John 10:27-10:30

It is often said that “Marriages are made in heaven,” but it must be admitted that many are lived elsewhere. The modern solution to marital difficulty is either to bypass marriage entirely or divorce. But is this the way to go?

Scripture: Matthew 19:1-19:12

Dr. Gary Collins says, “There probably is no other word in the English language which is so symbolic of controversy and which so quickly triggers emotional reactions.” Our task is to think biblically about the subject and deal Christianly with those who are involved.

Scripture: Romans 1:18-1:32

Marriages become shaky for a number of reasons, and there are numerous helpful ways of handling the problems. But there is one ingredient which all marriages need—”agape” love. What it is and how it is experienced should top every marital agenda.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13:13

Ivan Boesky told the graduating class at Berkeley, “I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself.” Not many people would openly agree with him, but we all have to struggle with our attitudes to material things.

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-6:34

In recent years there has been a tendency to talk about the, “quality of life” rather than the “sanctity of life.” Without in any way suggesting that quality of life is without importance, we need to understand the change of emphasis and where it might lead.

Scripture: Genesis 1:26-1:28

The German theologian, Helmut Thielecke said, “Americans have an inadequate view of suffering.” Whether or not he was right, there is no shortage of suffering in America. We need to ensure our view of it is “adequate.”

Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3-1:9

“What is God’s will for my life?” It’s a serious question that is asked by believers of all ages facing all kinds of decisions and uncertainty. As Jill Briscoe explains, you cannot know the will of God until you find God and get to know Him personally—or at least slow down long enough for Him to find you!

God does not intend for His will to be a mystery to us. In fact, He makes it perfectly clear in His Word. What can we learn from the stories of the Bible… from how Jesus handled certain situations? A great deal!

Through this teaching, you’ll learn how you can know God’s will for your life and then begin to apply it in practical ways. Are you ready to surrender your plans if it means you will accomplish His?

Scripture: Philippians 2:13, Romans 8:27, James 4:13-4:17

Mary of Nazareth, mother of Jesus, was the best woman that ever graced this earth. Good, so good, but not good enough to get into heaven without the Savior she bore.

Scripture: Luke 1-2

It's common today to see women fight in the military, hold political office, and work jobs formerly dominated by men. But 2,000+ years ago, women had few rights and little worth in society. That didn't matter to Jesus—He had a heart for women, and it's shown in every conversation and interaction He had with them.

Jill's series teaches about women in the Bible who spent time with Jesus. But if you go deeper, you'll discover its real lesson—no matter what your story is or where you've come from, no matter if you've lived a good life or made mistakes, every woman (every human for that matter!) has the same thing in common. We all need a Savior.

Single? Suffering? Sorrowful? Sinful? Then listen closely and hear how much you are valued and loved by God's son.

Scripture: Romans 8:18-8:26

Has your perception of sexuality been warped? Our culture feeds us an idolized image of sex that is dramatically distant from God's intent. But just as the world is explicit about sex, so is God's Word! He clearly outlines His intent for the sexual experience.

During His ministry, Jesus demonstrated perfect love to all kinds of sinful people—including women known for their sexual sin. Jill points to Christ's encounters with these women, to reveal Jesus' standard for sexual behavior and of His grace when we fall. Can we accept His truth about sex and live according to His grace?

Scripture: Romans 1

Mary and Martha opened their home to Jesus. The two were very different types of women. Martha had the gift of hospitality and was a doer. Mary has other, mystical gifts, and was content to sit at the feet of Jesus.

Scripture: Luke 10:38-10:41

If you're a single woman, know a single woman, or are the mother or father of a single woman, this message is for you.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:18-7:35

When it comes to "scheming," that all started in the Garden of Eden. It was always God's intention that we would rely on Him, but instead Adam and Eve took matters into their own hands.

In this message, Jill takes us to Matthew 25 and the parable of the talents. The question is, how faithful are you in maximizing what God has given you?

Scripture: Luke 15, Matthew 25

It's common today to see women fight in the military, hold political office, and work jobs formerly dominated by men. But 2,000+ years ago, women had few rights and little worth in society. Scripture: Revelation 19:5-19:9, Revelation 20:1-20:4

To all in the world—and even many in the church—joy and godliness seem like separate pursuits. Joy is seen as circumstantial happiness, and godliness is seen as rigid rules of self-denial. But that supposes a low view of joy and an even lower view of godliness!

In this message, Stuart heralds the heights of true joy and godliness—the deep and abiding blessing at home in the heart of those like God, devoted to love and steadfast faithfulness.

Scripture: Psalm 4

The Psalmist had been experiencing extreme difficulties for a long time. His emotional and spiritual resources were running low. He expressed his concerns to the LORD, but his faith held fast. And he learned from his times of trouble.

Scripture: Psalm 13

Heart attitudes that attempt to resist or negate God are at the root of behavioral problems that beset human existence. God reaches the hearts of His creatures and calls these attitudes “folly.” But there is salvation for such people and the believer’s concern is to see the good news spreading to those most in need of it.

Scripture: Psalm 14

The Psalmist openly admits that in his heart he is experiencing “intense inner turmoil.” He is feeling lonely, pressured and concerned. So he turns his thoughts to the Lord, refreshing his mind and laying his concerns out in prayer.

Scripture: Psalm 25

Fear is not only a human response we all share as human beings, but an essential one that needs recognizing, accepting, and managing. Effectively managed fear ceases to control our actions. But if unacknowledged, fear takes control, and we find ourselves caught up in varying degrees of destructive behavior.

Scripture: Psalm 27

Deep in the human heart lie longings and aspirations. Some of them are fulfilled; others never come to fruition. The circumstances of life for some are so full of problems and disappointments that the heart may become discouraged and sometimes embittered. This Psalm speaks to the issues of the longing heart.

Scripture: Psalm 37

The circumstances of life are so often outside our control that we do not know how to cope. This can lead to anxiety, resentment and anger. If we do not handle these heartfelt feelings well we may suffer the worst kind of heartburn!

Scripture: Psalm 39

David carried a deep dark secret in his heart which until it was confronted and confessed caused deep inner turmoil (see Ps. 32). When he finally dealt with it he experienced spiritual restoration and renewal. How, exactly, this came about is outlined in this Psalm for our benefit.

Scripture: Psalm 32, Psalm 51

We tend to think of the heart as the seat of the emotions. The Bible sees it as the center of being – the part of a person that discerns, desires and decides. A steadfast heart makes “settled, fixed, loyal” decisions about the Lord. But how?

Scripture: Psalm 57

There are two inescapable realities – death and evil. That’s why we have Court TV and Dr. Kevorkian, cemeteries and police, health care reform and crime bills. Moses, the man of God, said in this Psalm that if we are to address these realities – and we must – we need to ask the Lord for “a heart of wisdom.”

Scripture: Psalm 90

There is a battle going on around us. Do you realize that? We are fighting a battle against the foes of the Lord. Maybe you’ve felt this battle in the giants you’re facing in life, the problems that bog you down. Here’s the good news: God calls, equips, and empowers His servants for the good fight of faith against the giants of this world.

David’s story is a perfect illustration of God calling His people to face different giants throughout life. In this message, Jill Briscoe shows us how God equipped David with everything he needed to be victorious in each battle. If we allow Him to work through us, God will equip us, too.

Scripture: 1 Samuel 17

Stuart takes a look at what the Bible says about the heart in this 12-message series, based on references in the book of Psalms, a collection of authentic conversations with God. Whether you’re in a time of joy or pain, you will find hope, wisdom, and a fresh understanding of God’s character in Stuart’s teaching.

Scripture: Psalm 119:1-119:16

Giant Temptation comes to all of us. All of us know him. He knows us—he knows when our guard is up, and he knows when we’re feeling lazy. It’s in our times of laziness that we’re faced with temptations that we’re not prepared for, and we, like David, have to choose whether to go along with the giant of temptation or to get off the rooftop.

Have you experienced a time when you’ve failed to overcome a temptation? Jill Briscoe shows us that the value of David’s life story is not only that it shows man’s great sin, but that it shows God’s even greater forgiveness and grace.

Scripture: 2 Samuel 11

Do you believe that some sin is too big for God to forgive? Do you wonder if someone who has sinned can be restored and renewed? Can God use them again? Can God use you again?

Be comforted. There is “life after sin,” as Jill Briscoe shows us by exploring the life of David.

In Psalm 51, David writes about turning around and running into the arms of the loving, merciful, compassionate God who was waiting for him, waiting to take him back. Do you need to turn and run in to the arms of God? He’s waiting for you, too.

Scripture: Psalm 51
