What Happens When We Die?

Jill Briscoe

Kids ask their parents. Dying patients ask doctors. You might be asking yourself: What happens when we die? We have a vague notion of heaven and hell… in fact, many people assume they are going to heaven because they are “good people.”

In this 6-message series by Jill Briscoe, she answers our most compelling questions about death, heaven, and hell, using explanations throughout the Bible. Some of the questions she confronts are:

  • How can I be sure I’m going to heaven?
  • What do we do in heaven?
  • Will we know each other in heaven?
  • If God is all loving, why is there a hell?

Messages From This Series:

There is a peace that comes with knowing you can trust in someone’s promise. Being sure about our eternity in heaven is no exception. Jill speaks on John 14 where Jesus promises all believers that He has gone to prepare a place for us and he will return for us once again. His death on the cross made it possible for Him to follow through on this promise.

Scripture: John 14:1-14:6, Ephesians 2:6

Do you have troubles in your life that are causing grief or tension in your household? Do you dream of living in a place where joy is abundant and everything around you is perfect? This is what heaven will be like. Revelation 22 gives us a snapshot of the beauty and perfection that awaits those of us who have put our trust in the Lord. Heaven will be a true home with a true father.

Scripture: Revelation 22

What is hell? How could a loving God create such a horrible place and then be willing to send His creation there? Jill agrees that these are normal thoughts to have, but she uses a number of passages to change our perspective on the matter.

The greatest fall came when God’s highest angel wanted to take His place and therefore was thrown out of heaven; hell was created as this angel’s new home. Hell was never created by God for man, but if we choose to reject Him, this dreadful place becomes our eternal home.

This is message includes Jill’s poem “The Wish Wand.”

Scripture: Luke 12:13-12:21

Do you have friends and family who have not yet accepted the Lord? Knowing that our time on earth could end at any moment, are you worried about them spending eternity in the outer darkness called hell?

Jill insists that if hell is a real existence and there’s a possibility that our unbelieving loved ones may end up there, it is a crucial matter to discuss. She dives into this controversial topic: Is there a second chance to accept Christ after death?

Scripture: Matthew 13, 2 Samuel 14, Luke 16, Ezekiel 33:7

We have the free will to make our own choices in life. These choices set the path for our earthly existence and, ultimately, our eternal existence. But there is a coming day when we will stand at the great white throne of God and deal with the consequences of the most important choice we had to make on earth.

Jill talks through several verses in the Bible explaining the ramifications of the decision to trust Jesus Christ as our Savior, or not.

This message includes Jill reading her poem, “Judge Jesus.”

Scripture: Revelation 20:11-20:15, Revelation 21:27

Have you ever received a gift you didn’t deserve? This is exactly what happens at the judgment seat of Christ. The Bible is filled with hints of what this event might be like for us. Jill discusses a couple of them for us to try and paint us a picture.

Not only do we receive the gift of dwelling in heaven when Christ died on the cross for us, we also get rewarded for the things that Christ did through us while we were on earth.

Scripture: Romans 14:10-14:14, 1 Corinthians 3:10-3:15
