Triumph Over Temptation

Stuart and Jill Briscoe

We face temptation every day — sometimes every moment of every day. While we may struggle with sinful desires and selfish motives, we must remember that every temptation to do wrong is also an opportunity to do right!

But how do we fight against the temptations permitted by God and promoted by Satan? The steps of our souls are the battlefields on which God and Satan are locked in combat. Though we face a minefield of opportunities where we might stumble, God promises to provide a way out.

In the 4-message series Triumph Over Temptation, Stuart and Jill Briscoe equip believers with powerful biblical truth to help us triumph over temptation and grow our faith in the process.

Messages From This Series:

Christ can give us the words to send the devil away. He can give us the words to rebuke the devil. In this message, Jill Briscoe gives us tools to handle temptation, even as we see it lived out in the life of Jesus.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

Scripture: Matthew 4:1-4:11

Trials and temptations are the inevitable lot of fallen people who live in a fallen world. God does not send them, but He does permit them. Provided we handle them correctly, they serve to help us mature. But when mishandled, they can lead to great harm. The Children of Israel were a great example of this.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:1-10:22

How do you handle temptation? Do you just give in, shrug your shoulders, and say it's just the way you are? Do you give in and blame Satan? Or do you rely on God and in His power resist the temptation?

Every temptation that comes our way is an opportunity to go wrong, but it is also an opportunity to do right, and Scripture tells us that God will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear. In this message, Stuart Briscoe helps us understand what temptation is and where it comes from, and he encourages us to find opportunities to do right when we’re tempted to go wrong.

Giant Temptation comes to all of us. All of us know him. He knows us—he knows when our guard is up, and he knows when we’re feeling lazy. It’s in our times of laziness that we’re faced with temptations that we’re not prepared for, and we, like David, have to choose whether to go along with the giant of temptation or to get off the rooftop.

Have you experienced a time when you've failed to overcome a temptation? Jill Briscoe shows us that the value of David's life story is not only that it shows man's great sin, but that it shows God's even greater forgiveness and grace.

Scripture: 2 Samuel 11
