In James chapter 1, we find this promise:
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5)
It’s a realistic promise—God knows that you and I do indeed lack wisdom. And it’s a reassuring promise—God’s wisdom will be given generously when we ask for it!
But what does it look like to grow in God’s wisdom? Scripture makes it clear that it’s not simply a case of developing knowledge or insight. Rather, the Bible teaches that God’s wisdom is fundamentally practical.
For instance, Colossians 4:5 says:
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
Paul is saying that the wisdom of God will change your relationships. Why? Because being wise means you’re caught up in God’s purposes for those people and not simply focusing on your own purposes.
The wisdom of God also changes your attitude towards church.
His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms… (Ephesians 3:10)
Whenever you sit in a community of faith, God is displaying His incomparable wisdom in the heavenly places. That’s certainly got to change how you view going to church on a Sunday morning!
And the wisdom of God will also shape your character. As James says,
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. (James 3:13)
Friend, these are the ways that God wants to work in you. So pray for the Spirit’s help, dig deep into the Scriptures, and then get on and walk in the ways of wisdom!
