When worry weighs heavy on your mind, evenings may be filled with tossing, turning, and fretting over the future. But as difficult as those nights might be, I want to offer you a bit of encouragement. Because after every restless night comes a new, beaming dawn—and a new, gracious opportunity.
In the bright, fresh dawn after dark and stormy nights, peace and tranquility take the place of turmoil and stress. Frayed nerves are calmed, troubled spirits are soothed, trepidation steps aside, and hope is restored. A fresh start is at hand!
The prophet Jeremiah’s dark night was terrifying. Not only had he suffered the abuses and indignities of cruel men, his sufferings led him into a deep spiritual gloom and the darkest night of the soul. His pain and anguish were intensely physical, emotional, and spiritual.
But after describing his stormy, fearsome night, he made a remarkable statement about God’s mercies morning by morning. The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! By His mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each day (Lamentations 3:22–23).
Fresh mercies every day! These mercies are not listed, but we know they stem from God’s faithfulness and are hidden in God Himself.
Jeremiah insisted, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him” (Lamentations 3:24).
Jeremiah discovered the secret of being able to return—morning by morning—to renew his relationship with the Lord and to drink deeply of His unfailing love.
This love was unfailing because it was the source and the substance of God’s covenant with His people. This covenant was an agreement and promise never to leave or forsake them. It guaranteed God would be nothing less than God to His people—at all times and in all circumstances.
Like Jeremiah, you can start each new day refreshed by the unfailing love of your covenant-making and promise-keeping God, whose mercies are fresh each morning.
God’s fresh mercies are found in communion with Him through His Word, through prayer, and through fellowship with His people. And they’ll overcome even your deepest worries.
Dark nights then give way to fresh mornings, and God’s mercies bring fresh energy and vigor with which to meet the day. So give each day the fresh start God wants for you!
