Ask Stuart… about assurance

Q: I became a Christian nine months ago. And while I still love Jesus, I feel the passion I had at first is not as prominent. How do I sustain my love for the Lord?

A: The period following a wedding is referred to as the “honeymoon phase.” It’s a time of laughter, celebration, and bliss. But it’s temporary. Sooner or later, the married couple learns that real life looks much different and requires maturity, perseverance, and endurance. The same is true in our relationship with Christ. The impassioned emotions of the honeymoon phase may be passing, but you still belong to Christ. Continue to meet with Him in prayer, in His Word, and through community in a local church and you will grow into a deep intimacy with your Savior.

Q: I often find myself struggling with doubt. How can I have a greater assurance in my faith?

A: To start, let me remind you of what the apostle Paul writes in Romans 8:39. He says that nothing in all creation “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” That means even your doubts cannot separate you from Christ. The way to develop an ongoing trust in this truth is through the community of saints—building relationships with fellow believers who can help bear your burdens, encourage you with God’s promises, and pray alongside you for His strength. Invite others into your life to help you in this way as you seek to grow in your Christian faith.
