Making God Smile

Do you have an effect on how God feels? Do your actions, thoughts, or feelings make God happy or sad? To know the answer, you only need to look to Jesus. Jesus lived to bring His Father pleasure. In John 5:30, Jesus said, “For I seek not to please myself but Him who sent me.” This contrasts sharply with the powerful human tendency to want to please ourselves.

But Jesus wasn’t the only one who wished to make God smile. Speaking about the Lord, the apostle Paul said, “We make it our goal to please Him” (2 Cor. 5:9). Perhaps you, too, would like to make God smile. But how do we do that?

Enoch may not be a household name, but in his day, he had a great reputation. He was known as a man who pleased God. He made God smile because he “walked with God” in a loving, trusting relationship.
This Scripture talks about “those who live according to the sinful nature” and those “who live in accordance with the Spirit.” The former, we are told, cannot please God.
Pleasing ourselves is instinctual. Pleasing God does not come naturally. Therefore, we need to learn how to do it. In fact, we need to be convinced that we should do it.
We have seen that an attitude of trusting obedience towards the Lord and careful attention to our personal behavior are vital if we are to please God.
This concluding practical teachings of the Epistle to the Romans are based on an exhortation to “offer our bodies as living sacrifices.” Whatever this means, we can be sure that it results in a lifestyle that is “pleasing to God.”
