Who is God?
God is difficult to define because we have only our limited understanding and human words to explain someone who is not of this world.
God is infinite, beyond our full comprehension, ever present, more powerful than hurricanes that shred islands or fires that level forests. Yet, He is more loving and forgiving than any mother or father, husband or wife, or friend.
We learn so much about who God is from what He’s created. In Romans 1:20, the apostle Paul wrote: For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
God is the brilliant creator of the universe, who designed every creature from the elephant to the amoeba with amazing detail, who orchestrated the dazzling colors of the sunrise, who made each one of us in His image.
We learn about who God is through His Word, compiled in the Bible’s 66 books and written by more than 35 people to whom God spoke directly or by His Spirit. The Bible records God’s commandments, illuminates His authority, reveals His holiness, introduces His chosen people, reflects His devotion, exposes His might, and demonstrates His patience. Above all, it tells the story of His love for us, His children. By His very nature, because of who He is, God cares about us and loves us.
But our sin separates us from God and His holiness. And because He’s a just and holy God who can’t tolerate evil or sin, only He could provide the means to restore His relationship with us (John 14:6). He sent Jesus to this world to die for our sins and make a way for us to come into relationship with the Holy Father.
Jesus is God’s Son, whom He sent from heaven to the world to teach love, truth, and righteousness and to bear on the cross the punishment for our sins so that we can have eternal life in heaven. “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).
God is three beings in one—a concept called the Trinity that is hard for us to grasp. The Trinity is the Father, the creator of everything, the Son, Jesus, who is fully man and fully God, and the Holy Spirit, who speaks to our own spirit, guides and comforts us, and enters our spirit when we seek forgiveness and acknowledge that Jesus is God’s Son.
So who is God? He is holiness and perfection. He is love, truth and justice. He is everything good. He is the giver of grace. He is our Savior. And He is infinitely more.
