Q: Pete, how can a believer who struggles with worry find rest?
Most of us try to fix our anxieties and worries by ourselves. But God wants us to do the opposite. He says, “You can’t fix this on your own. Stop striving and start trusting Me.”
In order to experience true peace, we must rest from our own work just as God rested from His. Instead of taking things into our own hands, we need to leave them in His. When we trust Him, we will experience the rest He promises.
In the book of Hebrews, we read, “Now may the God of peace... equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ...” (13:20-21).
In other words, to stop our striving is to trust God’s equipping. He is the One who works in us and through us. As we surrender to His indwelling Spirit, we find perfect rest.
Q: What would you tell someone who can't seem to shake worry from her heart and mind?
Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” And so for whatever situation you may be facing, instead of giving in to worry, bring your concerns to the One who has the power to overcome.
The promise from Philippians for those who trust God with their worries is this—“The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (4:7).
